What is Eye Vision Correction

Laser eye correction, often referred to as refractive eye surgery, is a group of procedures designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses by reshaping the cornea to improve the eye’s ability to focus.
The most common laser eye correction procedures are:
- LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis): This is the most popular form of laser eye surgery. A thin flap in the cornea is created using a femtosecond laser. The flap is then folded back, and the exposed corneal tissue is reshaped using an excimer laser. The flap is repositioned and adheres on its own, healing quickly.
- CLEAR/SMILE (Refractive Lenticule Extraction): This is a newer procedure and is less invasive than LASIK. In SMILE/ CLEAR, a small incision is made, and a lenticule (a thin disc of corneal tissue) is removed. There’s no flap creation and no excimer laser used.
- PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): PRK was the precursor to LASIK and is still in use today. In PRK, there’s no flap creation. Instead, the outermost layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed, and the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped with an excimer laser. The epithelium then grows back over a few days.
The Importance of Eye Vision Correction

- Improved Visual Acuity: The primary goal of the procedure is to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses, enabling individuals to experience clear vision without aids.
- Convenience: Many find it inconvenient to wear glasses or contact lenses daily. Laser eye surgery can offer a long-term solution.
- Lifestyle Benefits: Many activities, such as sports, swimming, and even simple tasks like traveling, become easier without the need for corrective eyewear.
- Boosted Self-confidence: For many, the ability to see clearly without the need for glasses or contacts can boost self-esteem and confidence.
- Safety: Contact lenses, if not used properly, can lead to infections or other complications. Laser correction can mitigate such risks.
- Cost Savings: Over time, the cumulative cost of glasses, contact lenses, and their associated products can be substantial. Laser eye surgery can often be a more economical option in the long run.

Frequently Asked Questions
We tried to answer most common
questions, if you have any additional,
please get in touch with our friendly team.
Lasertreatment to correct the need for glasses or contact lenses aims to change the shape of the cornea. The cornea is most anterior part of the eye and part of the “outer wall” of the eye. Worst case as a result of the surgery: permanent damage/ opacification/ irregularisation of the cornea causing, in severe cases, a need for corneal transplantation. We never had such a case at Hamburg Vision Clinic.
The lasertreatment is not painful. The treatment is done after only a couple of seconds and the effective anesthesia is provided “just” by eyedrops.
No! You definitely don`t need one due to the short treatment, the “pain-free-treatment” due to effective eyedrops and the calm guidance provided by the surgeon.
Usually no. But you can get an estimate and ask your insurance company. Some included a special option into your contract.
